『a+u』1月号はアダム・カルソとピーター・セント・ジョン率いるカルソ・セント・ジョン・アーキテクツを特集する。事務所の設立から30年以上を超えたいま、彼らのプラクティスはコンペ勝利から10年来のプロジェクトであるスイスのアイスホッケー・アリーナや、企業建築の野心的改修プロジェクトであるロワイヤル・ベルジュなど、大規模建築の完成を次々と迎えるフェーズにある。1990年ロンドンに設立されたカルソ・セント・ジョンは、既存の状況－それが社会文化的コンテクストであっても古い建物であっても－を丁寧に扱い、一つ一つのディテールとそこから生まれる質料性をもって独自の建築をつくりだしてきた。扱うプロジェクトの規模が変わっても彼らの設計姿勢は一貫しており、前回の特集、2015年3月号で紹介したテート・プリテンのミルバンク・プロジェクトやレンガの家にたいするのと同様の熱量と感性をもって、本号に掲載した19の作品に対峙している。既存建物が対象であろうと新築であろうと、カルソ・セント・ジョンは常に規範・規準を疑い、既存の構築環境から思想と素材とを読みとることで、「世界を別の視点から見直すよう、建築の定義を改める」ことを試みている。（編）

Feature: Caruso St John Architects

a+u’s January issue features Caruso St John Architects, led by Adam Caruso and Peter St John. Practicing for more than 30 years, the firm is completing a series of major buildings, such as ZSC Lions Ice Hockey Arena, a competition-winning project 10 years in the making, and Royale Belge, an ambitious renovation of a landmark corporate building. Founded in London in 1990, Caruso St John carefully analyzes the existing situation – be it the sociocultural context or an old building – to create a unique architecture that informs both materiality and detail. The scale of the projects varies but the architecture is always their own, as their design approach, while consistent, responds sensitively to the variations. Caruso St John Architects have approached the 19 works in this issue with the same passion and sensitivity as in Tate Britain’s Millbank Project and Brick House, projects introduced in a+u’s March 2015 issue.
