a+u October 2024 Special Issue
Fumihiko Maki: Words and Places

This issue is dedicated to the memory of Fumihiko Maki, containing a series of interviews conducted before his passing on June 6th, alongside memorial essays paying tribute to his legacy.
The interviews were originally conducted as part of Maki’s oral history archive and span eight sessions, tracing his life from childhood to the present day. Each session focused on a significant project from different periods of his career, providing insight into Maki’s reflections and thoughts over time. Maki once remarked, “I believe that the atelier office of this scale with which I work has fulfilled its social responsibility toward the projects entrusted to it, functioning as a kind of design community up to the present day.” Guided by this perspective, the interviews include not only Maki’s recollections but also those of the design leads who collaborated with him on various projects, capturing their shared memories and experiences. The interviews commenced on February 26th, 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite his declining health, Maki continued to share his insights, with the seventh and final interview conducted on October 15th of the same year.
Maki’s “words,” drawn from his vast knowledge and profound humanity, have always challenged us to rethink architecture and urbanism. His concept of “places” encompasses not only the towns and regions he explored from his youth but also the numerous sites around the world where his projects took shape. (a+u)
